One of a number of improvement projects to Gatwick airport, the £20million North Terminal Interchange (NTI) saw a new passenger interchange facility and station constructed for the train that shuttles between the North and South Terminals. It was essential that the station maintained a ‘clean, light, airy space’, was open-sided and provided an impressive first impression, whilst at the same time providing protection from the elements for passengers.
J & J Carter Ltd acted as a Specialist Contractor for Costain Construction to install a Tensile Fabric Façade, cladding some 800m2 to serve as rain screens to the newly built North Terminal Interchange. In addition to overcoming the challenges typical of working on an airport project such as the tightness of the site, integrating with other trades, and the fact that it was live site, J & J Carter were able to integrate the rain screen steel framework to the NTI primary framework ensuring everything fit perfectly the first time. This was achieved by undertaking a 3D check survey of the primary steel framework, which was modelled and then the steel frame was designed to suit the “as-built” connections.
