J & J carter were approached by Studio Morison to support the design of Escape Vehicle #9 for the Dutch Art Festival in the Netherlands.
Studio Morison is an ambitious collaborative practise that transcends the divisions between art, architecture and theatre, facilitating their practise and the projects that are created from it.
Sleeping only two people, The Escape Vehicle provides visitors the chance to spend the night in one of the darkest locations in the Netherlands, using a PVC tensile membrane chosen specifically to curate an intense glow when the sun rises.
Made entirely from aluminium and PVC, the structure is comprised of a circular chamber elevated above the ground on four pyramidal aluminium legs. The legs are held in place by Spirafix scre anchors, which leave almost zero imprint on the landscape.
The chamber was built using a protective outer layer of specifically commissioned aluminium expanded mesh, and a taut inner curing membranous weather layer of Sauleda VIP FR yellow PVC fabric.
A quilted foil insulation layer forms the ceiling of the chamber, which is designed to maintain a comfortable temperature during day and night.
Situated on the top deck is a conical feature, shaped from sheet aluminium.
