As we reflect on the accomplishments of 2024 and anticipate the exciting possibilities of 2025, J & J Carter—a leading marquee manufacturer and pioneer in tensile architecture—is proud to share an ongoing commitment to innovation, quality, and transformative projects in fabric architecture. Our dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering has both redefined spaces and positively impacted communities and industries worldwide.
In 2024, we continued to excel in delivering projects that showcase our expertise and passion for creating unique tensile fabric structures. Our team worked collaboratively to provide solutions that not only met but exceeded our client’s expectations, reinforcing our position as leaders in the industry.
This year has been a remarkable journey of growth and achievement for J & J Carter. Each project allowed us to push the boundaries of what's possible—from designing safe spaces for schools to creating bespoke industrial covers and upgrading historic event venues. Our commitment to collaboration and quality unites all these endeavours. By working closely with clients and partners, we delivered solutions that not only met but often exceeded expectations.
In 2024, sustainability remained a major focus for us. We made significant strides in reducing our environmental impact by utilising eco-friendly materials and enhancing our recycling initiatives. Our commitment to creating tensile fabric structures that are not only visually stunning but also environmentally responsible is at the forefront of every project we undertake.
Our team has been fortunate to work on a variety of exceptional projects across the UK, each showcasing our dedication to creating innovative, high-quality structures. Whether crafting sports halls for schools, bespoke covers for industrial machinery, or elegant spaces for historic venues, 2024 has truly been a year of growth and collaboration.
One of our standout projects this year was with Mercia Academy, which sought to transform its sports facilities into an inspiring space supporting a variety of athletic activities. This project was about more than constructing a building; it was about creating a safe and inviting environment for students. We outfitted each internal column with impact protection pads to prioritise safety. Blue sports drapes were installed in adherence to Lawn Tennis Association regulations, ensuring a professional finish. In partnership with Oasis Event Door Ltd, we integrated large roller shutters and personnel doors to enhance accessibility. The result is a functional and welcoming facility, a space where the academy’s students can grow athletically.
We thrive on tackling challenges, and the Siemens Train Lift Cover project was an opportunity to showcase our expertise. Wise Handling approached us to create a cover for their straddle carrier used to lift eight-tonne trains for maintenance. This was no ordinary project. The cover, made from vibrant orange 900g PVC, was a one-piece structure weighing over 700 kilograms. Creating something of this scale required precision and ingenuity. With support from Artura and SH Structures, we ensured the frame and cover worked seamlessly together. This collaboration was a testament to our ability to deliver unique, bespoke solutions. Seeing the final structure protecting critical equipment from the elements was a proud moment for our team.
Some projects require a delicate touch, and our work at Winchester Cathedral was such an example. Nestled in the walled gardens of this historic landmark, the Garden Marquee needed a significant upgrade. The goal was to create an elegant event space capable of hosting weddings, corporate gatherings, and garden parties throughout the year. Working closely with the cathedral team and Historic England, we crafted a solution that met both aesthetic and practical needs. The marquee’s insulated roof and double-glazed elements ensure comfort in all seasons. Its design not only complements the cathedral's beauty but also respects the historic site's sensitive surroundings. By using concrete pads instead of ground stakes, we preserved the garden's integrity while providing a sturdy foundation. This marquee is now a space where timeless history meets modern functionality, serving as a stunning venue for up to 150 guests.
This year, we also contributed to the film industry with an exciting project at Farnborough International Film Studios. Tasked with refurbishing a massive 2,000-square-metre workshop space, our team played a key role in revitalising the facility. The project involved creating new gables, roof sheets, and cladding to enhance the workshop’s durability and usability. The sheer scale of the structure—20m x 100m—made it one of our larger undertakings of the year, but it was a challenge we embraced wholeheartedly. The improved workshop space now supports the needs of creative professionals and reinforces Farnborough’s reputation as a premier destination for film production. It's always rewarding to see our work contribute to industries that inspire and entertain.
At J & J Carter, we believe in building more than tensile structures—we build relationships and legacies. As we close the 2024 chapter, we are grateful to our clients, partners, and dedicated team members for their unwavering support and trust, making this year a success. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones and are confident that 2025 will bring even greater accomplishments. We look forward to continuing our journey of innovation and excellence, creating structures that inspire and stand the test of time.
